It might be pouring and look as dismal as a nightmare outside - but our volunteers have been prepping the raspberry fields in betwix raindrops. The berries ought to be outstanding with all of the tlc they have recieved this week! Garlic and green onions are coming along beautifully. I can't wait till the scape are ready to be harvested. I can taste a scape and asparagus omlet already. Many thanks to our volunteers for their hard work and determination. 

The laying hens have slowed down egg production this week. The gloomy overcast days have put them in a bit of a funk. Hang on gals! Sunshine is coming! Last week, when the sun was still part of the environment the girls were out taking dust baths. It is just a hoot to watch them roll around and fluff their feathers in the dust. 

The peeps are at the toddler stage now and not very cute anymore. It reminds me of teenagers at that gawky, geeky, acne stage - The chicken ark is just about finished and ready for the chickees to go outside. Yeah! They won't start laying till August but the array of colored eggs will be very welcome! 

It's busy as ever but lots of fun and ALWAYS interesting!

Tonight was our second meet and greet. Both meetings went famously, lots of questions, interests, great people and desire to be part of the farm. It is just incredible. Thank You to all the folks that took time out of their busy day to come out and learn more about us. We are grateful that you all still want to be involved after the tour and information session. Apparently, we haven't scared anyone away yet!

Tim, Megan and Alan planted peas today with the new Jang Seeder. Alan and Schooner cleaned bee hives. We had one hive make it! WHEW! It was a very sad day when we discovered in late winter that our favorite hive had died. We had such a cold and brutal winter the poor little gals just didn't make it.

Tim shot some video of everyone working in the garden today. I think Schooner will put it on our Facebook page. I have to get with the program and get some video on the site for you. I'll tackle that soon.

I do believe my husband is addicted to chickens, I am serious. Fifteen more hens joined the flock today. I know, I can hear you chuckling - here this woman is chicken of chickens. Maybe this is how Schooner plans to do away with me? I don't know. At any rate we now have EVEN more chickens. If Schooner comes in the door dressed in a white suit with a black bowtie it's time for a divorce.

It seems the sunshine is an ever elusive visitor these days! I do see some blue peering out of the clouds this morning though! 

Yesterday, Tim & Alan entertained the video crew from WTOL 11 for about an hour and a half shooting footage all over the farm. WTOL is doing a series on how the weather affects your job. 

Tim is probably one of the coolest guys I've met in a long time. He is such a character, you can't help put be drawn to him. We were extremely fortunate that Megan and Tim found us. Life on the farm just wouldn't be the same. Thanks Tim for being you - 'cause you rock!

Spring is defiantly “springing” right in front of us! I doubt there are too many of us that will protest! I must admit, I did have a little argument with my alarm clock this morning, my mind wasn’t ready for that 60 minute leap into the future.

We’d like to thank the MANY people that visited us at the Toledo Grows - Seed Swap! What an incredible day! Also, a HUGE thank you to the folks that have attended the CSA info sessions in Bowling Green!

Little peeps are coming in again this week. Our laying flock is going to be a diverse lot. I like different colored eggs. It’s like Easter everyday! Dark brown, tan, pink, green, blue, cream, and turquoise—ah, it is one of life’s small pleasures. These little peeps won’t begin laying until around August but when they do - it’ll be a rainbow!

Schooner will be trimming down the red raspberries soon. Our red raspberries are the fall variety so they do much better with a yearly trim. Also, he’ll be applying some organic soil amendments and compost teas as soon as weather allows. The black berries should be incredible this summer on the tilting trellis. It will be a wall of black berries! I can taste them now!

Shannon and Schooner are busy in the apiary. We lost all of our colonies due to the severe cold weather we had. We had one hive for three years - we loved those gals and spoke with the bees everyday. They became a part of our little family. It was a sad day when we discovered we had lost them. Bees really are incredible - you can learn so much from them. New packages were ordered way in advance and our hives are all ready to welcome the new arrivals. This summer I’m going to do a few articles on the apiary for our CSA newsletters. This winter Schooner and our friend Karen attended a Bee Class with the Householder Family - boy, did they learn from some pros! Wow! The Householder's have been keeping bees for many years and are the largest honey producers around our area. Super nice people, very informative and just a wonderful opportunity to learn practical knowledge from people who know what they are doing. I wish I could have went but I attended a local foods event and wasn't able to go! 

The CSA garden is just waiting for eager hands and able bodies! Peas will go in next week, once it dries out a bit. You want to plant peas around St. Patrick’s Day if the weather allows. Then it just keeps going from there! That reminds me, I better plant my sweet peas! Summer just wouldn't be the same with out one of my favorite flowers! We still have some CSA memberships available. Tim & Megan are hoping to have a Toledo drop off if we have enough interested people in the Toldeo Area.

Have you ever wondered who grew and harvested the lettuce in your salad or raised the hens that provided the eggs for your morning omelet?  Who is the farmer, where is their farm and how are these farm fresh products nurtured for your enjoyment?  One exciting way to connect you to the local farms and farmers that produce your food is through Community Supported Agriculture programs (CSAs).  CSAs offer “shares” or memberships in exchange for a portion of the season’s harvest - allowing you to enjoy products fresh from the farm, building community and strengthening the connection between you and your food.


On March 7th, we invite you to come and meet a handful of local farmers who are passionate about Community Supported Agriculture in Northwest Ohio and excited to share the highest quality vegetables, berries, meats, eggs, honey and more with you and your family!  Learn how these farmers and their CSAs use sustainable and organic practices to provide naturally grown, farm fresh products.  This educational event is complete with a sampling of local foods, recipes and ideas for using local foods in your own kitchen!  This event features a number of local CSA producers including Riehm Farm of Tiffin, Shared Legacy Farms of Elmore, Friendship Farms of Waterville, Omega Meats of Grand Rapids and Schooner Farms of Westin.


Attendees will also have the chance to win a certificate to one of Bowling Green’s tasty restaurants!

Holy Smokes! Put the word on the street you can work for food and you get a bunch of people wanting to part of that! We only have two spots left! We do have volunteers opportunities if you can't commit to a work share - even our volunteers go home with goodies! 

It's a great experience, you learn about farming using natural methods, you meet some really awesome people and you become part of something that is fulfilling and nourishes all of us! 

If would be interested in a work share or volunteering - please don't hesitate to get in touch! We'd love to have you join us on the farm!

What’s new at Schooner Farm’s? In a few words – LOTS of AMAZING STUFF! 2010 was our inaugural year and it was tough! We toiled, we struggled, we laughed, we wondered if it would EVER rain, yet we had one of the most gratifying experiences of our lives!

2011 is going to be stellar!

·        We’ve got over 50 different kinds of veggies chosen to plant and over 150 varieties! The tomatoes alone add up to 17 different varieties! There’s a dozen different winter squash, 15 different types of lettuce and greens, 5 different types of carrots and the list goes on and on. Lots of old standbys and a few unique items for fun!

·        We have a fabulous Garden Team in place along with several interns and volunteers that are itchin’ to get in the dirt!

·        Schooner Farms will also have their very own natural, pasture raised, NON GMO fed meat chickens and turkeys available for sale along with our famous golden yolk eggs! We have some of the happiest hens around! Our eggs are brown but occasionally you might find a blue or green shelled egg as well.

·        Over the 20 week CSA season we will feature 5 different local farms/businesses. You’ll receive an item produced on their farm along with lots of information about who they are and what they do. Our mission is to reach out to other small farms and businesses to encourage people to buy local! So far we have bread, cheese, flowers and specialty garlic. I’m still looking for an orchard or some other farm to feature.

·        We’re working on trying to secure a dairy share with Snowville Creamery. If you’ve never tasted Snowville Creamery’s grass fed dairy products – you are missing manna from the bovine!!! Our problem with offering the share is quantity – if I can get enough folks to try it & begin wanting this yummy leche we’ll be in like Flynn. Check out their website so you can read about their “organic” & sustainable philosophies – they mirror Schooner Farms almost exactly!

·        In our best efforts to be a little different and offer our members a little more diversity on a weekly basis, I’ve changed up our distribution process a bit. Instead of me loading your trug for you each week, we’re going to have you do it. We’ll go through and clean, process and ready everything – but you will get to pick out your own stuff! Some weeks when we have a surplus of certain items you’ll be given the option of taking larger quantities if you’d like. In addition, we’ll have an exchange table – so if you get an eggplant and you aren’t too fond of them you can mosey on over to the exchange table and switch it out! How easy is that? Naturally, this is a garden and learning to eat seasonally is especially challenging when as a society we’ve gotten so used to fruit and veggies year round.

Wow! Just the mention that we were taking names for the 2011 Season has brought in a bunch of new people wanting to join our little CSA! How exciting! Once our 2010 members have decided if they would like to jump back in we'll begin taking applications for new members. Our 2010 members have till the end of Nov. to decide. We've already had a good number rejoin or say they were planning to. YEAH!! Of course, we'll loose some folks as well. That's bound to happnen, but we certainly appreciate their support this past year!

To our Waiting List folks - please be patient. I'll be sending you a link to the membership application form soon. I know many of you have called or talked to us about getting in - we'll get ya in!

Thanks for your interest and we're so excited you want to join us! We've got LOTS of new things we are doing in 2011. We just recently applied for Certified Naturally Grown, which is a little more stringent than Certified Organic.

Here's a few of the things we are doing next year:

-Working with other local farms/bakeries to include an item from their business in our shares periodically. Such as breads, heirloom garlics, fresh flowers, cheese.
-A GRASS FED Dairy Share
-Grass Fed Meat
-Pasture Raised Chicken
-Organically Fed, Pasture Raised Eggs
-We're putting in a small orchard & grapes
and more...
